A Short History

The Manor of Ljung  was founded in the beginning of the 17th century. In 1729 the manor was bought by Hans von Fersen.

After his death, the Manor was taken over by his son Axel von Fersen The Elder, who was very involved in the Swedish political life of the period ( he was leader of the Hat Party).

He wanted to have a grand manor house where he could entertain his political friends. Therefore, in 1774  he  commissioned Iohan Rehn,  one of the most well known architects of the time, to design, build and decorate Ljungs Slott. The Manor House still looks today as it did in the 18th century.

After the death of Axel von Fersen the elder, the Manor was passed to his son Axel von Fersen the younger who was rumored to have had a secret love affair with Marie-Antoinette. In 1791, during the French Revolution,  he was behind an unsuccessful  escape attempt  by Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette.

On 20 June 1810,Von Fersen, attended the funeral of  Crown Prince Karl August. During the funeral, the crowd became increasingly agitated. Accused of Karl August's murder, Axel von Fersen was attacked and brutally torn to pieces, . He is buried in nearby Ljung Church.
